MMR

Vaccine Choice 1: MMR

The Measles, Mumps and Rubella Vaccine was introduced in 1988 and during its short life has been the subject of a great deal of media speculation and coverage.

Parents have become increasingly aware over the concerns raised about this particular vaccine and as a result the uptake of this combination vaccine in certain parts of England, Scotland and Wales has revealed a decline.

The Department of Health recommends that this is the safest way to immunise your child. It covers your child for all 3 diseases at once. The Department of Health also states that there is no proven link between MMR, Autism and Bowel disorders.

The MMR combined vaccine is approved by the World health Organisation.

Our information pack contain more articles and leaflets on this subject.

Vaccine Choice 2: Single Vaccines

Single Vaccines have come to parent's attention since the controversy over the MMR vaccine being linked to both autism and bowel disorder emerged. Many parents are seeking this option even though no proven link between MMR and either of the above conditions has yet been found. Some parents consider this choice a safer way to immunise their child. They see the Single Vaccine MMR as an option which will not overload their child's immune system, this is especially the case if a reasonable length of time is left between the vaccinations.

The Department of Health does not recommend this choice as they believe the child is at risk during the time period between each vaccination. Again it is up to the parent to weigh up the information and make their decision about the risk involved in any of the options open to them. If you are not certain then we would suggest you discuss this with either your own GP, our GP, your Health Visitor or other qualified Health Professional.

All the single vaccines used by our clinic are approved by the World Health Organisation and are strictly regulated by the MHRA (the body responsible for the safety of vaccines and medicines in the UK).

If parents pursue the single vaccine option, we strongly recommend they have access to a reputable qualified GP access to aftercare and an ongoing vaccination programme to ensure the best interest of their child.

Vaccine Choice 3: No Vaccination At All

There is a strong network of professionally educated people who are against the vaccination programme altogether. Their belief is in a well balanced healthy diet and lifestyle.

Pursuing this approach generally means approaching alternative practitioners. The belief is that if a child is well nourished they will only be subject to "mild" childhood illnesses and this will in effect boost the child's immune system naturally.

Opponents of this school of thought would argue of the level of risk involved in this approach. They will agree that no vaccine is 100% effective, but that a vaccine will give a milder form of the disease than if the child contracted the disease totally unprotected.

Again we would suggest the parent considering this option discuss it with their own GP or our GP or health visitor.
